The Old Man and The Sea

The old man and the sea written by the famous American author Ernest Hemingway in 1951 in Cuba. It was Hemingway’s last book and it is kind of educational book. This book extremely impressed me. When I read this book, I alway thought about If I am Santiago( the protagonist of this book).  I may give up at the beginning because I don’t have enough food, weapon, water.

The story is between a old man named Santiago and a little boy called Manolin struggles with a gigantic Marlin at Gulf Stream. Manolin started learning fishing with Santiago at 5 years old. Although Manolin only 5 years old he shown much more mature than other 5 years old kids. Santiago taught Manolin fishing skill and one more important thing is how to be a real man. And then they went to Gulf Stream fishing. After 40 days, Santiago didn’t get any fish and Manolin had to go back with his parents. Santiago didn’t prevent him because Santiago didn’t want to make Manolin felt embarrassed. He still didn’t get any fish for 84 days.  He was going to died because he didn’t have enough food, water, weapon. At the 85 day, He fish a gigantic Marlin. This Marlin is really huge, it longer than Santiago’s boat. Santiago struggle with this huge Marlin for 2 days. At last Santiago killed this Marlin. After Santiago killed this huge Marlin, there were a lots of sharks around his boat. Santiago had to fight with these sharks again. Eventually, Santiago killed all sharks, but the huge Marlin was eaten. Santiago had to tow Marlin’s skeleton back to home. After that, Santiago was so tired. He was sleeping and had dream about lion. Manolin came to see Santiago, Manolin thought that Santiago was not beaten. Santiago said “ But man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed but not defeated.”

 After reading the end, I thought this lion imply Santiago’s character. Santiago’s character is strong and courageous. I highly like Santiago, because he present a huge courage. Santiago went into sea area who had never been. Santiago’s courage affect me trying do everything I have never try. Hemingway’s style of this book is to educate people have more courage to do something new, and there are lots of detail description in this book. Hemingway like through detail description to reflect people should be more courageous and never give up. At the same time of this book published, the U.S was in developing era. This book also taught people try to more brave, and strong. This book influence the society deeply at that time. After people read this book they had passion to work. I am strongly recommend this book. This book teach me a lot about courage. When I afraid to do something new, these sentence in my head push me to do it. I think this book is so worth reading.
